Last week, one of the library’s student workers exhibited her senior portfolio of acrylic paintings. There was a great turn out and the guests were impressed with the work. Another artist attending the function commented that Stephanie’s work had great skin tones, which very difficult in acrylics. Stephanie, great show and congratulations!

Yesterday, the Williams Library invited speaker Dr. Thom Flamboe read from his recently self-published book Can You Fix Him? Adventures in Child Therapy. He read many piognant and funny stories from his career in child therapy. It appears he will used almost any tactic to get a child to tell his/her story. He normally asks his 100 “dumb questions,” but has many conventional and unconventional methods. His various methods include; having a child talking about her dreams, complimenting a child that is supposedly different (e.g. dressed in all black with a mohawk), using a juvenile response to a child’s juvenile act, and many have responded to his stories about his family.

Tonight PBS’ FRONTLINE airs “Growing UP Online”
“MySpace. YouTube. Facebook. Nearly every teen in America is on the Internet every day, socializing with friends and strangers alike, “trying on” identities, and building a virtual profile of themselves–one that many kids insist is a more honest depiction of who they really are than the person they portray at home or in school.
In “Growing Up Online,” FRONTLINE peers inside the world of this cyber-savvy generation through the eyes of teens and their parents, who often find themselves on opposite sides of a new digital divide. From cyber bullying to instant “Internet fame,” to the specter of online sexual predators, FRONTLINE producer Rachel Dretzin investigates the risks, realities and misconceptions of teenage self-expression on the World Wide Web.”
If you miss the TV program, watch it online.

Book: Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan.
It is not about grading or finals week, but about families who stayed in the Dust Bowl region during the 1930s. “Egan’s portraits of the families who stayed behind are sobering and far less familiar than those of the “exodusters” who staggered out of the High Plains. He tells of towns depopulated to this day, a mother who watched her baby die of “dust pneumonia,” and farmers who gathered tumbleweed as food for their cattle and, eventually, for their children.” (excerpt from The New Yorker review)
——————————————–
Online discussion (optional): This aspect allows individuals to post comments about the book before the meeting(s).
To join: Select the link below and then select the “Join This Group” link, which is located on the right bar.
