Join the NSU Book Club

Posted by mightylibrarian on September 24, 2007

The Williams Library has created the NSU Book Club. The club will read two books (fiction and non-fiction) a semester on various topics. In addition, we hope to have a faculty member serve as an expert on the topics covered in each book. The club will meet in person, but an online discussion board will also be available (more info below).

The NSU Bookstore will carry paperback copies at 20% off.

Who can join: Any NSU student, faculty or staff member (NSU friends may also join)
First Meeting: Wednesday, September 26, 7pm
Second Meeting: Wednesday, October 10, 7pm
Location: Williams Library
Club web site: http://groups.google.com/group/NSUBooks

Book: Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan.
It is not about grading or finals week, but about families who stayed in the Dust Bowl region during the 1930s. “Egan’s portraits of the families who stayed behind are sobering and far less familiar than those of the “exodusters” who staggered out of the High Plains. He tells of towns depopulated to this day, a mother who watched her baby die of “dust pneumonia,” and farmers who gathered tumbleweed as food for their cattle and, eventually, for their children.” (excerpt from The New Yorker review)

Online discussion (optional): This aspect allows individuals to post comments about the book before the meeting(s).
To join: Select the link below and then select the “Join This Group” link, which is located on the right bar. If you do not have a Google account, create a new one (you may use your NSU or other email address). Once you join the group, you may post you thoughts about the book and comment on others’ posts.
